Myasthenia Gravis
Overview
Myasthenia gravis is a long term chronic neuromuscular disease that leads to varying degree of skeletal muscle weakness that worsens with activity and improves after period of rest.
Types of Myasthenia Gravis
There are 8 types of myasthenia gravis namely:
- Congenital myasthenia gravis
Congenital MG is typically inherited through either of the parent’s genes and not caused due to any malfunction of the immune system
- Ocular myasthenia gravis
In Ocular MG, the muscles that control the movement of the eye and eyelid are typically affected.
- Generalized myasthenia gravis
In this type of MG, it is characterized by widespread muscle weakness and not confined to one particular specific muscle group.
- Transient neonatal myasthenia gravis.
Symptoms
The most commonly seen symptoms in myasthenia gravis is weakness in hands and leg muscles difficulty in chewing food due to muscle weakness in the jaw area, double vision and difficulty in speech .
Causes
Myasthenia gravis is caused by abnormal immune reaction in which the body’s natural immune defenses inappropriately attack and gradually injure certain receptors in muscles that receive nerve impulses.
Risk factors
Couple of risk factors that might lead to myasthenia gravis are smoking, obesity, lack of physical activity, insufficient diet. Newborn infants are also at risk many a times.
Prevention
Myasthenia gravis can be prevented by maintaining good hygiene conditions.
Treatment
There is no treatment for myasthenia gravis, some allopathic medicines do help in improving the quality of life of the patient. Some natural treatment available for myasthenia gravis are acupuncture, and kumbhak therapy.

FAQs || Kumbhak Therapy for Myasthenia Gravis
1. Can Myasthenia Gravis be reversed through Kumbhak Therapy
In Myasthenia gravis the muscle shape gets distorted. It is a problem of nerves. Nervous system has got degenerated. This nervous system regeneration is possible through kumbhak therapy or breath hold.
2. Can the uncontrolled activity of the muscle in Myasthenia Gravis be reversed
The uncontrolled activity of the muscle can be controlled by muscle and nervous regeneration, and structural correctness through Kumbhak therapy.
The muscles control the nerves, so we need to work at the muscle, nerves and the structure simultaneously through breath hold.
3. Can blurred vision in Myasthenia Gravis be corrected
Blurred vision in myasthenia gravis can be corrected by kumbhak therapy.
It happens because the signals between the nerves and the muscles is not being sent. Through breath holding the nervous system and the muscle regeneration starts building up and thereby the coordination are corrected.
