Decoding Ashtang: Yoga vs Ashtang Chikitsa

Most of us have heard of Ashtang Yoga — the eight-fold path outlined by Maharshi Patanjali. It’s the spiritual roadmap that guides us toward Kaivalya/Samadhi, or complete liberation from worldly desires.

But did you know there is another, equally profound “Ashtang” that very few people talk about? Welcome to the powerful world of Ashtang Chikitsa — a science rooted in Sanatan wisdom, designed to help us live this life healthier, stronger, and more fulfilled.

Let’s explore how these two ancient systems differ — and why understanding them can transform your life.

Ashtang Yoga: The Path Of Liberation

Patanjali’s Ashtang Yoga consists of eight limbs:

  1. Yam – Ethical discipline
  2. Niyam – Personal discipline
  3. Asana – Postures
  4. Pranayama – Breath regulation
  5. Pratyahara – Withdrawal of senses
  6. Dharana – Concentration
  7. Dhyan – Meditation
  8. Samadhi – Enlightenment / Liberation

Its goal? – To transcend the physical world and reach a state of pure consciousness. Or in simpler words – Ashtang Yoga is a spiritual path to rise beyond life.

Ashtang Chikitsa: The Path To a Fully Alive Life

Ashtang in Ashtang Chikitsa refers to eight dimensions of the human system:

  1. Srishti Sharira – Creation mechanism of the body
  2. Garbha Sharira – Fetal development system
  3. Dosha Sharira – Functional body governed by Vata, Pitta, Kapha
  4. Marma Sharira – Network of vital energy points
  5. Pramana Sharira – Anatomical & measurable physical body
  6. Sankhya Sharira – Body seen through Sankhya philosophy
  7. Prakriti Sharira – Your original constitution
  8. Vikriti Sharira – Your imbalances / disease state

This forms the foundation of Ashtang Chikitsa and Kumbhak Therapy — where breath-based kriyas activate the body’s innate healing intelligence.

Both emerge from Sanatan Dharma — but their intentions are beautifully different. Yoga liberates you from the world. Ashtang Chikitsa empowers you to live beautifully in the world.

Relevance of Ashtang Chikitsa in Today’s World – In today’s busy life, we don’t have the luxury of isolating ourselves in caves or forests. We have families, careers, responsibilities — and a body that must support us through them. This is where Kumbhak-based Ashtang Chikitsa becomes life-changing.

Practitioners commonly experience:

✅ Higher energy & stamina
✅ Relief in body pain and inflammation
✅ Clarity, calmness & emotional stability
✅ Strong immunity & metabolic balance
✅ Better work performance & focus
Pain-free, medicine-free living

You don’t withdraw from life — You become more alive, more capable, and more joyful.

In Simple Words…

  • Ashtang Yoga → leads you beyond the physical body.
  • Ashtang Chikitsa → restores and elevates the body so you can live life to your fullest potential.

Different journeys. Same ancient roots. Unmatched wisdom.
